I'm the audience now

The thesis of this newsletter (barf lemme start that over)

The whole point of this newsletter is to help marketers (or anyone who needs to market something, which is low key everyone?) stop running on a never-ending content hamster wheel and get back to what makes them great.

Their story, their message, their values...

One day, it dawned on me what the issue was: business owners detach themselves from the audience they market to.

They think of their target customer as an abstraction - a set of characteristics (a customer persona).

But rarely do they think of their customer or audience as a reflection of a part of them.

And that's the shift that needs to be made.

Your audience reflects a piece of you

This might not apply to big businesses, but for small businesses or creators, it does.

1) You started a business for a reason.

In a TikTok I made, I gave the example of someone who starts a smoothie shop. Maybe they started it because they're health conscious, or there is a lack of smoothie shops available in the area. But they had a *reason* to start it.

Sure, your customer may be demographically different than you. But what makes you think your audience doesn't share in the reason you had to start the business in the first place? You should probably let them know so they can vibe with ya!

2) Content should talk to something that resonates with you.

Because if it resonates to you it will resonate for your ideal customer, client, or audience.

It goes back to the question marketers often ask themselves. Would I even like this post?

If not, skip it.

3) Think of your customer as an extension of you, not different from you.

Marketing is just talking to people. Remember you're talking to people, not an abstract idea of a customer.

A person like you.

A reflection, if you will. You have my permission to sing the song (only 90s kids will know).

That's all for this week!

Ciao for now,

Dom

This is a quote from Soviet dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn from his famous book, "The Gulag Archipelago." It's one I reflect on often, and it sits especially heavy on my heart after last week. "Gradually, it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either—but right through every human heart—and through all human hearts." That's the newsletter for today. 🤍, Dom 1230 22nd Ave Kenosha, WI...

A few weeks ago, I was at my cousin's house and he asked, "Have you seen Kpop Demon Hunters?" And I was like.... no? He goes, "I'm putting it on." Loved it, 10/10, no notes. I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't that. I went home and watched it again a few days later. (Am I hooked?) I won't spoil it, but it has a lot of philosophical story lines. Good & evil, feeling uncomfortable about our true selves, stepping into your power...it got deep! This movie became an international...

I woke up today to a brisk morning and realized it's almost SEPTEMBER?! K! Bye, where did summer go? Though I'm not looking forward to a long winter, the colder months are definitely when I reflect more. Last winter, I had damn near a whole reinvention of self. One could say I locked in. Locked in but never stressing It's not too late Q4 can really seem like a blur. Fall comes, the holidays follow, and boom - it's 2026. But last year, instead of falling into the mindset that the year is...
