The advice I needed to hear

My first social media management job was at a non-profit. It was very design-heavy and I learned most of my graphic design skills there.

I secured another social media management client and this time, it was very video-focused. I learned how to edit short-form video, optimize for different social media platforms, and keep up with algorithms. I also learned my most important lesson: not to create solely for an algorithm.

In between, I had SEO projects, website projects, and email projects. Now I primarily take on email projects.

My first thought when I reflected on my career was, "Wow, I'm all over the place."

But it's that non-linear path that made me into a more confident freelancer and online business owner. Because let's be real, confidence gets you clients and confidence gets you paid!

What My Non-Linear Path Taught Me

Recently, a family member asked if I could build them a simple website for their restaurant.

"Of course I can!" I told them.

I knew exactly what platforms and systems they'd need for a simple website that fits their budget and my expertise.

How?

Because I've been scrappy before. I wasn't worried about not knowing enough because I was always ready to find the answer.

I know basic SEO. I can use a basic website builder. I can do basic graphic design. I can make their website. All of my previous jobs and projects prepared me for that.

So in this email, I'm giving the career and business owner advice that I wish someone told me.

Some people's careers are not linear.

Saying it again.

Some people's careers are not linear.

And that's okay! I'd argue *many* people's careers are not linear!

As I previously illustrated, picking up skills from different jobs and pursuing different interests ultimately benefited me.

No marketing exists in a silo; all these systems play together. What looked like indecision was actually skill-building.

I was always one step closer to what I ultimately wanted, and there's nothing to say I won't pivot again.

It's all about playing to your strengths, changing course when necessary, and knowing that it's your life and you need to do what makes sense for you. ❤️

Ciao for now,

This is a quote from Soviet dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn from his famous book, "The Gulag Archipelago." It's one I reflect on often, and it sits especially heavy on my heart after last week. "Gradually, it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either—but right through every human heart—and through all human hearts." That's the newsletter for today. 🤍, Dom 1230 22nd Ave Kenosha, WI...

A few weeks ago, I was at my cousin's house and he asked, "Have you seen Kpop Demon Hunters?" And I was like.... no? He goes, "I'm putting it on." Loved it, 10/10, no notes. I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't that. I went home and watched it again a few days later. (Am I hooked?) I won't spoil it, but it has a lot of philosophical story lines. Good & evil, feeling uncomfortable about our true selves, stepping into your power...it got deep! This movie became an international...

I woke up today to a brisk morning and realized it's almost SEPTEMBER?! K! Bye, where did summer go? Though I'm not looking forward to a long winter, the colder months are definitely when I reflect more. Last winter, I had damn near a whole reinvention of self. One could say I locked in. Locked in but never stressing It's not too late Q4 can really seem like a blur. Fall comes, the holidays follow, and boom - it's 2026. But last year, instead of falling into the mindset that the year is...
