The Danger of a Single Story

Years ago, I remember seeing the viral TED Talk from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the danger of a single story.

Essentially, her message is that the story we hear about a particular type of person or place may not be correct and can lead to big misunderstandings.

Stories have power. They shape how we see the world. But the power of stories has to be harnessed correctly.

Telling your brand's story

What if your target customer has a story about you in their minds that isn't true? What if they have no story about you at all?

This is the importance of storytelling in your marketing, and this is the technique that will set brands apart in the AI gold rush.

Here are some brand stories to think about incorporating into your marketing:

  • Your brand's backstory (why it was started, transformation stories)
  • A setback that was overcome
  • A customer's story
  • A hypothetical story (make one up, just be clear that it's made up for illustrative purposes)

And, there's no better way to tell a story than directly to a potential customer's inbox.

I predict email marketing is going to become a preferred way to tell your brand's story, especially in today's noisy social media environment. I suggest jumping on that before everyone else does!

🫶🏼 Something I'm loving right now:

Last weekend, I watched the movie Nonnas on Netflix. It was cute and a little corny, and it'll make you nostalgic for the times with your grandma. 🥹

How I can help you:

I'm working on my offers to turn your email list into a storytelling machine. For now, reply back and let me know what you thought of this email!

Ciao for now,

This is a quote from Soviet dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn from his famous book, "The Gulag Archipelago." It's one I reflect on often, and it sits especially heavy on my heart after last week. "Gradually, it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either—but right through every human heart—and through all human hearts." That's the newsletter for today. 🤍, Dom 1230 22nd Ave Kenosha, WI...

A few weeks ago, I was at my cousin's house and he asked, "Have you seen Kpop Demon Hunters?" And I was like.... no? He goes, "I'm putting it on." Loved it, 10/10, no notes. I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't that. I went home and watched it again a few days later. (Am I hooked?) I won't spoil it, but it has a lot of philosophical story lines. Good & evil, feeling uncomfortable about our true selves, stepping into your power...it got deep! This movie became an international...

I woke up today to a brisk morning and realized it's almost SEPTEMBER?! K! Bye, where did summer go? Though I'm not looking forward to a long winter, the colder months are definitely when I reflect more. Last winter, I had damn near a whole reinvention of self. One could say I locked in. Locked in but never stressing It's not too late Q4 can really seem like a blur. Fall comes, the holidays follow, and boom - it's 2026. But last year, instead of falling into the mindset that the year is...
